If you have any other suggestions of good gaming notebooks that are cheaper and/or better please let me know.
The HP is better. The Alienware has more Video Memory, but the HP makes up for that and more, with the system memory and other better hardware. 256MB of Video is plenty for any games out there. Plus you get a huge screen!
Well, I just broke down and ordered this from NewEgg ($349):
ASUS Eee PC Eee PC 900HA XP – Shiny Black Shiny Black Intel Atom N270(1.60GHz) 8.9" WSVGA 1GB Memory 160GB HDD Netbook
Whaddya think? Anybody already got one? It has some pretty good reviews…and it runs cool…I might try to dual booy XP/LINUX.
Here’s a recent review and chat:

The thing is amazing. The Intel Atom CPU is smaller than a penny!!!
EDIT FOR TRAVIS: Small and cheap is just what I wanted for field photography, so it isn’t a problem for me.
Anannama: Nice non-answer. And I said DUAL BOOT! XP AND LINUX!
joy: I paid $349 plus Next Day UPS,
You did good, I think. I won one about 8 months ago. They claimed it is worth $1700.00 dollars! It has served me very well, but I dont think I would have bought it for that price!
I’ve been looking at the OLPC and subnotebook machines, and it got me thinking: what is the cheapest, but commercially avaiable, laptop on the market.
So… open source, end of line, whatever. Just the cheapest laptop with a reasonably full size (at least 13") screen and keyboard.
Anyone know?
[By the way, I'm asking for curiousity, not because I want one. I know you can find decent deals on ebay, craigslist, kajiji and the like.]
The Asus EEEPC is very cheap, but has a screen smaller than 13"
Next up is the Acer EXTENSA 5220-100508CI.
Going up the price tree and way up the quality tree is the Toshiba Satellite U300.

I am looking to purchase a new notebook PC, up to around $1400…I am most concerned of its light weight and video card; 13′ – 16 ‘ preferably, as well as a nice look, no ugly HPs or Toshibas….I have owned 2 Sony VAIO notebooks that were ok, but what do you all suggest after purchasing or reviewing notebooks? I see a lot of notebooks that say they have small dedicated cards, but up to 512 MB and can also have a total video memory of 2280 MB! I assume this is from the system memory, but does this extra non-existent memory help out in game play? What do I need to look out for?
I would recommend you to check out ProCompare.com (http://procompare.com/top/notebooks). They have a recommendation engine that ranks laptops and other tech products based on ratings and reviews from a community of trusted IT professionals. They also have a cool personalization slider that lets you personalize the results based on the criteria that are most important to YOU.
Hope you’ll find this answer useful…
