Product Description
With inviting textures and calming colors, the slim, travel-ready Sony VAIO NW laptop brings together stunning imagery, access to all your multimedia, and excellent productivity in an affordable package. This model (VGN-NW160J/S) has a fabric-like exterior in silver rattan that’s enhanced by a texture of gently undulating waves. But more than just a stylish accessory, the VAIO NW offers powerful computing resources with an Intel Core 2 Duo and a high-definition 15.5-inch widescreen XBRITE-ECO display that’s great for multitasking as well as watching your favorite downloaded movies and TV shows on the go.
The Sony VAIO NW in silver rattan with textured cover composed of gently undulating waves (see larger image).
The isolated keyboard makes typing comfortable and precise, and the Display Off button helps conserve energy (see larger image).
The extra-wide, theater inspired 15.5-inch display uses Sony’s XBRITE-ECO LCD technology so you can see deeper blacks, brighter whites, true-to-life color and razor-sharp detail from almost any angle–a great match to the Blu-ray Disc optical drive (read-only), which lets you play high-definition Blu-ray Disc movies in crystal-clear resolution. You can also make your own using the dual-layer DVD±RW drive (with CD burning capabilities) and included Sony Movie Story software–just choose the supplied template and professional-looking cutaways, cross-fades and soundtrack syncing are automatically done for you. And with the HDMI A/V output, you can connect the VAIO NW to a compatible HDTV to display your creations to a larger audience.
It’s powered by the 2.1 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T6500 processor, which boosts speed, reduces power requirements, and saves on battery life. It also offers a fast 800 MHz front-side bus speed and 2 MB L2 cache. It also includes Intel’s 5100AGN wireless LAN, which will connect to draft 802.11n routers and offers compatibility with 802.11a/b/g networks as well.
A built-in 1.3-megapixel webcam (with integrated microphone) lets you join in on video conferences as well as make long-distance VoIP calls. Tackle virtually any graphics requirement with the ATI Mobility Radeon HD4570 graphics card featuring 512 MB of dedicated VRAM. Other features include a 320 GB hard drive, 4 GB of RAM (8 GB maximum capacity), ExpressCard 34 slot, Gigabit Ethernet, both Memory Stick and SD card readers, and pre-installed 64-bit version of Windows Vista Home Premium (SP1).
This Sony notebook is Energy Star certified, and is RoHS-compliant, effectively reducing the environmental impact by restricting the use of lead, mercury and certain other hazardous substances.

The Gemstone Blue is large and useful, both as a desktop computer and a media centre. It sports a 16:9 widescreen LCD, as well as a Blu-ray drive and HDMI, so it’s primed for high-definition content playback. In fact, the Gemstone Blue is an entire home theatre in one device.
With its 18.4in screen, which has a native resolution of 1920×1080, and its six built-in speakers, the Gemstone can be placed on a coffee table while you (or even you and a couple of mates) sit on the couch watching the latest flicks or TV shows. It has good contrast, although you need to get its angle just right, and reflections can be a problem due to its glossy screen. The blue LEDs for the power button might also be a distraction, and there is no way to dim or disable them.
The speakers provide surround sound, and they provide good all-round frequency response once you disable the filters in the audio driver’s configuration. In movies, explosions and environmental sounds will still take precedence over voice, so plugging the notebook in to an external receiver is still recommended — for this, it has S/PDIF output.
A built-in digital TV tuner allows the notebook to be used for watching, time-shifting and recording TV programs. It found all the local stations in our area without any problems and playback was smooth for standard- and high-definition channels. It has a long recording time thanks to the installed 320GB hard drive, which is formatted into two equal partitions. The Gemstone Blue’s chassis also has space (and a Serial ATA connector) for a second hard drive, so you could equip it with up to 640GB of internal storage.
If you want to watch movies on a big-screen TV, you can use the Gemstone’s HDMI output port. However, how good it looks will depend on the scaling ability of your TV as the notebook’s NVIDIA GeForce 9500M GS graphics adapter can’t be used to scale the desktop so that it fits perfectly on your TV. There is a D-Sub port if you want to connect the notebook to a monitor without HDMI, but S-Video is not present.
Acer ships the Gemstone Blue with Windows Vista Home Premium and its Media Centre component can be used to display your media files and movies. Acer also provides Acer Arcade Deluxe interface for accessing your files. You can control both Media Centre and Arcade Deluxe by using the built-in, backlit touch-panel (Acer calls it the CineDash Media Console) that resides to the left of the full-sized keyboard; or you can use the supplied remote control. The touch-panel is an odd inclusion, as the remote control is more convenient to use.
For running productivity programs, the Gemstone Blue is perfect. Its Intel Core 2 Duo T8300 and 3GB of RAM propelled it to a score of 96 in WorldBench 6, which means you can do a little bit of everything with this notebook. Its big screen is suitable for editing photos and there is plenty of space to line up two windows side-by-side for comfortable multitasking. The notebook will also be swift when ripping CDs; it only took 1min 12sec to convert 53min worth of WAV files to 192Kbps MP3 files in our tests. This is a fast result.
The Gemstone Blue’s score of 3163 in 3DMark06 indicates that you can also play games on this system with relative ease, but not at high resolutions and not with high image-detail enabled.
Physically, the notebook is 44.5cm wide and weighs 4.1kg. It’s not one that you would want to carry around with you — even if you have a big enough bag to fit it in — but its size does make it comfortable to use as a desktop replacement. When it’s not plugged in, the eight-cell battery will last about 1hr 47min in a worst-case scenario (watching a movie), but much longer if you enable power management.
The Gemstone Blue ships with a lot of useful features: it has a built-in webcam, four USB 2.0 ports, Gigabit Ethernet, 802.11 draft-N wireless networking, an SD memory card slot and an ExpressCard/54 slot. You also get a VoIP handset, which connects to the notebook using Bluetooth. Unfortunately, it doesn’t have FireWire, but it does have an unnecessary modem jack.
What’s the difference, if any between 2 GB RAM and 2GB Dual Channel DDR3 SO-DIMM at 1066MHz – 2 x 1024MB? (I really want to know which is better). Also, which is better; Intel® Core™2 P8400 2.26GHz or Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 2.26GHz?
Now, the main reason I’m asking this is because I’ve seen these set of stats on an alienware notebook computer: Intel® Core™2 P8400 2.26GHz and 2GB Dual Channel DDR3 SO-DIMM at 1066MHz – 2 x 1024MB. Then I looked at a cheaper notebook computer with the stats: Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 2.26GHz and 2 GB RAM. Now, answering the question above will help me determine which is a better deal.
Practically all current chipsets support multi-channel mode for RAM. BUT you need TWO physical modules to run 2-channel mode (which has higher bandwidth). A SINGLE 2GB RAM module will only run in SINGLE channel mode even if chipset supports dual channel mode. 2×1GB configuration will run in dual-channel mode.
P8400 is a new technology (45nm) Core2 Duo Mobile processor that only draws 25 watts max. http://processorfinder.intel.com/details.aspx?sSpec=SLB4M
Core2 Duo E6400 is actually a 2-year old technology (65nm) desktop processor that draws 65 watts max.
I would expect the P8400 to perform better w/ its 50% larger 3MB L2 cache and more efficiently and cooler at only 25 watts.
If possible give me a brief review on them.
He mean ‘NETBOOKS’ you guys, The cheapest one i know is from ASUS which Is the EEEpc, it costs less than $150 in the united states, that’s around Php15,000.
It’s pretty capable though, slightly sluggish performer. i suggest you save a bit more for a larger notebook wherein you can play dvds, have larger storage space, better performance and, larger display.
Be patient, being an impulsive buy (like me) can have a lot of consequences, just bought myself the macbook pro 13 inch yesterday due to arrive this afternoon, i’ve been saving my money long enough, and i was supposed to buy the white one, now i’ve saved enough and happy with my purchase. not a lot of filipinos favor apple for their notebooks because of the compatibility issues, but we love iPods.
I know of Tigerdirect.com but is there anywhere i can get better deals?
I’m in search for a laptop myself. So far, I’ve gone to Walmart, Office Depot and Best Buy. At walmart, there was only a few, But if you go on walmart.com there’s a variety and some are even on clearance. Best Buy and Office Depot have sort of the same deals but Best Buy has way more laptops.
I suggest that you brows the net for a while.. also some people post that they are selling things on-line.. you just have to pick them up. My aunt bought this really nice laptop (sony) for like $300.00.. so visit craigslist.com I did and I found good offers.
Hope this helps! Good Luck.

The video was taken using a Canon PowerShot SD700 IS digital camera, and I know the close-ups got a bit blurry.
